About the Medicine

Nitrofurazone

Indications

Nitrofurazone is a topical antibacterial medicine applied to the skin. It is used to prevent or treat bacterial infection in burns, especially second and third degree burns, and in skin grafts, wounds, ulcers and other skin areas where infection is likely. It is usually available as an ointment, cream or soluble dressing.

How It Works

Nitrofurazone belongs to the nitrofuran group. It interferes with enzymes that bacteria need to produce energy and build their cells, which stops their growth and kills many of them. It works against a range of common skin bacteria, including Staphylococcus and many gram-negative bacteria, though some, such as Pseudomonas, are often resistant.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed by your doctor or as stated on the label. After cleaning the wound, a thin layer is applied directly to the affected area or onto the dressing, usually once a day or every few days, depending on the type of wound and the dressing used. Burns and large wounds should be managed by a doctor or nurse. Do not use for longer than advised.

Interactions

No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are expected because little is absorbed through intact skin. Avoid using other creams or antiseptics on the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises it, as they may reduce its effect.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to Nitrofurazone or other nitrofurans.

Side Effects

The most common problem is skin irritation or allergic contact dermatitis, with redness, itching, rash or swelling around the treated area, which becomes more likely with longer use. Long use may also allow resistant bacteria or fungi to grow. When used on large burns, the base of some products (polyethylene glycol) can be absorbed and may affect the kidneys.

Stop use and get urgent medical help if you have a spreading rash, blistering, swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing, or signs of worsening infection such as fever, increasing pain, pus or red streaks.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy is not well established; use only if a doctor considers it necessary, particularly on large areas. It is not known if it passes into breast milk; ask your doctor before use while breastfeeding and do not apply to the breast.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth.
  • People with kidney problems should use it on large burns only under close medical care.
  • Stop and see a doctor if irritation or rash develops.
  • Use for the shortest time needed to reduce allergy and resistance.

Overdose

Overuse on the skin mainly increases the risk of irritation and allergy. If swallowed, contact a doctor or poison centre.
