Sharbat Seb
Indications
Sharbat Seb is a Unani syrup made mainly from apple juice and sugar. In Unani medicine it is traditionally used as a tonic for the heart and brain, to ease general weakness, mild palpitations (a feeling of a fast or pounding heartbeat) and low mood, and as a refreshing drink during recovery from illness. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a treatment for heart disease.
How It Works
Unani tradition describes apple as a fruit that strengthens and calms the heart and mind. The syrup provides natural fruit sugars for quick energy and small amounts of plant compounds such as polyphenols (natural antioxidants). Its exact effects in the body have not been well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. It is usually taken by mouth, either on its own or mixed with water. Shake the bottle well before use.
Interactions
No important interactions are known. Because it contains a lot of sugar, people taking medicines for diabetes such as Metformin or Insulin should check with their doctor, as it can raise blood sugar. Tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to apple or any ingredient of the syrup.
- People with poorly controlled diabetes should avoid it unless their doctor agrees.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Some people may have mild stomach upset, bloating or a rise in blood sugar. Regular use of sugary syrups can harm teeth and add extra calories.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash, or if chest pain or palpitations become severe.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Apple is a common food, but the safety of this concentrated herbal syrup in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been studied. Ask your doctor before use, especially if you have gestational diabetes.
Precautions and Warnings
- Palpitations, chest pain, breathlessness or long-lasting weakness need a proper medical check; do not rely on this syrup alone.
- Diabetic patients should count the sugar it contains.
- For children, use only as directed on the label or by a practitioner.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset and high blood sugar, especially in people with diabetes. If a large amount has been taken or you feel unwell, contact a doctor.
