About the Medicine

Garlitab

Indications

Garlitab is a herbal preparation of garlic (Allium sativum), usually as tablets of dried garlic powder or extract. It is traditionally used to support heart and blood vessel health, and may help slightly lower raised cholesterol and blood pressure as part of a healthy lifestyle. It is also traditionally used for coughs and colds. Scientific evidence shows only modest effects, and it does not replace prescribed medicines.

How It Works

Garlic contains sulphur compounds, especially allicin, formed when garlic is crushed. These are thought to relax blood vessels, slightly reduce the liver's production of cholesterol, make blood platelets less sticky and have mild antibacterial effects.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Tablets are usually taken once or twice a day with or after food and a glass of water, swallowed whole. Regular use for several weeks is usually needed before any effect is seen.

Interactions

Garlic supplements may increase the risk of bleeding with blood thinners such as Warfarin, Clopidogrel and Aspirin. They can lower the levels of some HIV medicines (for example Saquinavir) and may add to the effect of blood pressure and diabetes medicines. Tell your doctor if you use any of these.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to garlic or onion family plants
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Within 7 to 10 days before planned surgery or dental extraction

Side Effects

Common effects include garlic breath and body odour, heartburn, wind, nausea and stomach upset. Rarely, it may cause allergic reactions or increased bleeding.

Get urgent medical help if you have unusual bleeding or bruising, black stools, vomiting blood, or swelling of the face and difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Garlic used in food is safe. Higher-dose supplements are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice, as safety is not established and they may increase bleeding risk around delivery.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not stop prescribed cholesterol or blood pressure medicines in favour of garlic. People with stomach ulcers or heartburn may find it irritating. Not recommended for children unless advised by a practitioner.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and an increased tendency to bleed. Seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Herbal preparation (cardiovascular support).

Storage
