Indications

Humuzin suspension is a Unani herbal liquid taken by mouth. The name comes from the Unani term for sourness or acidity of the stomach. It is traditionally used to relieve acidity, heartburn, sour belching, gastric discomfort, bloating and indigestion. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it does not replace medical treatment for peptic ulcer or reflux disease.

How It Works

Unani antacid preparations combine herbal and sometimes mineral ingredients that are traditionally believed to soothe the stomach lining, reduce the feeling of acidity and ease gas. The exact ingredients vary by manufacturer, so check the label of your bottle. Its effects have not been well tested in modern clinical studies.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Shake the bottle well before each use and measure the dose with the cup or spoon provided. It is usually taken after meals and at bedtime. Do not take more than the recommended amount. If symptoms last more than two weeks, see a doctor.

Interactions

Stomach-coating and antacid products can reduce how well some other medicines are absorbed, such as certain antibiotics, iron tablets and thyroid medicines. Take other oral medicines at least two hours before or after this suspension. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take, including blood thinners such as Warfarin.

Contraindications

• Allergy to any ingredient listed on the pack.
• Children, unless advised by a doctor or registered practitioner.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Some people may have mild nausea, constipation, loose stools or a skin rash. Stop using it if any unusual reaction occurs.

Get urgent medical help if you have black or bloody stools, vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, severe or constant stomach pain, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, or swelling of the face or throat with difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Do not use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

• Heartburn that is frequent, comes with weight loss, vomiting or difficulty swallowing, or starts after age 45 needs a medical check.
• Chest pain can feel like heartburn; get it checked if unsure.
• People with kidney disease, liver disease or diabetes should ask a doctor first, as some liquids contain minerals or sugar.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause stomach upset, constipation or diarrhoea. If a large amount has been taken, or a child has swallowed it, contact a doctor or the nearest hospital.
