About the Medicine

Ginkgo Biloba

Indications

Ginkgo Biloba is a herbal extract made from the leaves of the ginkgo tree. It is taken to support mild memory and concentration problems linked to ageing, and sometimes for dizziness, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or leg pain on walking caused by poor circulation. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited and mixed, and it does not replace medical treatment for dementia or circulation disease.

How It Works

The extract contains natural plant compounds (flavonoids and terpenoids) that are thought to improve blood flow in small blood vessels, act as antioxidants and reduce the stickiness of blood platelets.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: usually 120 to 240 mg of standardised leaf extract a day, divided into 2 or 3 doses, or as directed on the pack or by the doctor. It may take 4 to 6 weeks to notice any effect. Swallow with water, with or after food. Not recommended for children.

Interactions

It may increase the risk of bleeding with blood thinners and anti-platelet medicines such as Warfarin, Aspirin, Clopidogrel and anti-inflammatory painkillers (NSAIDs). It may reduce the effect of medicines for epilepsy and of Efavirenz. Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take.

Contraindications

  • Bleeding disorders, or a planned operation or dental surgery (stop beforehand as your doctor advises).
  • Allergy to ginkgo or any ingredient.

Side Effects

Usually mild: stomach upset, headache, dizziness, constipation or skin rash. Get urgent medical help for unusual bleeding or bruising, black stools, blood in urine, a sudden severe headache, fits (seizures), or signs of a serious allergy such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Not recommended during pregnancy, especially near delivery because of the bleeding risk, or while breastfeeding, as safety has not been shown.

Precautions and Warnings

Use with care if you have epilepsy or diabetes. Never eat raw or roasted ginkgo seeds, which can be poisonous. See a doctor for memory loss, dizziness or leg pain rather than relying on this supplement, as these can be signs of conditions that need proper treatment.

Overdose

Too much may cause stomach upset, restlessness, diarrhoea or weakness. Seek medical advice, especially if there is any bleeding.

Therapeutic Class
