S-Acetyl Glutathione
Indications
S-Acetyl Glutathione is a dietary supplement form of glutathione, a natural antioxidant made by the body from three amino acids. It is used as an antioxidant supplement to support general wellbeing and liver health, and it is often promoted for a brighter, more even skin tone. The added acetyl group is meant to help it survive digestion better than plain glutathione. It is not a medicine for treating any disease, and evidence for skin lightening and other claims is limited.
How It Works
Glutathione helps neutralise harmful molecules called free radicals, supports the liver in processing toxins and helps recycle other antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E. Inside the body's cells, the acetyl group is removed to release glutathione. It may also shift skin pigment production towards a lighter form of melanin, which is the basis of its use for skin tone.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label. Common supplement amounts are about 100 mg to 300 mg once or twice daily, taken with water, with or without food. Do not exceed the label amount.
Interactions
- No major interactions are well known.
- As an antioxidant, it could in theory affect some cancer treatments; people receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy should ask their oncologist before use.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all supplements you take.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to glutathione or any ingredient of the product.
- People under cancer treatment should not use it without their doctor's approval.
Side Effects
It is generally well tolerated. Some people notice bloating, stomach upset, loose stools or a skin rash. Long term use for skin lightening has not been well studied.
Get urgent medical help if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid use unless your doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
- A supplement does not replace a balanced diet or medical treatment.
- People with asthma should take care, as inhaled glutathione has triggered breathing problems; stop use if breathing symptoms appear.
- Be cautious of products that promise rapid skin whitening, and never use unregulated glutathione injections.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
Overdose
Serious toxicity from oral overdose is not expected. Larger amounts may cause stomach upset. If a large amount has been taken, or a child swallows it, seek medical advice.
