About the Medicine

Bacillus Subtilis [HU58]

Indications

Bacillus subtilis HU58 is a probiotic, a type of friendly bacteria taken to support gut health. It is a spore forming strain, which means it is protected by a tough coat that helps it survive stomach acid. It is used to support healthy digestion, to help restore gut balance during or after a course of antibiotics, and to ease mild bloating or irregular bowel habits. Evidence varies between uses.

How It Works

The spores pass through the stomach and become active in the intestine. There they help crowd out harmful germs, produce substances that support the gut lining and helpful bacteria, and may support the body's natural immune defences in the gut.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label, usually 1 capsule or sachet once daily with water, with or without food. If you are taking an antibiotic, take the probiotic a few hours apart from the antibiotic dose and continue for at least 1 to 2 weeks after the antibiotic course.

Interactions

  • Antibiotics and antifungal medicines may reduce the benefit; separate the doses by a few hours.
  • People taking medicines that weaken the immune system (such as after transplant or during chemotherapy) should ask their doctor before use.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to any ingredient of the product.
  • Severely weakened immune system, serious illness in intensive care, a central venous catheter, or recent bowel surgery, unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Side Effects

Mild gas, bloating or a change in bowel habit may occur in the first few days and usually settles. Serious side effects are rare.

Get urgent medical help if you develop high fever, chills or feel very unwell (rarely, probiotic bacteria can cause infection in people with weak immunity), or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Probiotics are generally considered low risk, but there is limited information on this specific strain in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor before use.

Precautions and Warnings

  • See a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, bloody, lasts more than 2 days, or comes with fever or dehydration; a probiotic is not a treatment for these.
  • Ask a doctor before giving to infants or young children.
  • Use extra caution in people with weak immunity or serious illness.

Overdose

Taking more than recommended is unlikely to be dangerous but may increase gas and bloating. Seek medical advice if you feel unwell.
