Probiotic Combination [2.3 Billion]
Indications
This is a probiotic combination providing about 2.3 billion live friendly bacteria per dose, usually Lactobacillus strains chosen for women's intimate health. It is used to help maintain a healthy vaginal flora, and as an add-on to support recovery from bacterial vaginosis or vaginal yeast infections, and to restore balance after antibiotic treatment. Evidence for benefit is moderate and it does not replace medicines prescribed for an infection.
How It Works
Lactobacilli are the bacteria normally found in a healthy vagina. They produce lactic acid, which keeps the area slightly acidic, and other substances that make it harder for harmful bacteria and yeasts to grow. Taking them helps rebuild these protective bacteria.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by your doctor. Oral capsules are usually taken once or twice a day with water, often with or after food. Some products of this type are used inside the vagina; follow the pack instructions. A course of several weeks is usually advised.
Interactions
Antibiotics may kill some of the probiotic bacteria; if you are taking an antibiotic, take the probiotic at least 2 to 3 hours apart. Antifungal medicines used in the vagina may also reduce the effect of vaginal probiotic forms.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient (some products contain milk derivatives)
- Severely weakened immune system, central venous catheter or serious illness, unless a doctor advises it
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Mild wind, bloating or stomach discomfort may occur in the first days. Vaginal forms may cause mild discharge or irritation.
Get urgent medical help if you develop high fever, severe stomach pain, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. See a doctor if vaginal symptoms (odour, itching, unusual discharge, pain) do not improve or get worse.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Lactobacillus probiotics are generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but vaginal symptoms during pregnancy should always be checked by a doctor before self-treatment.
Precautions and Warnings
It is a supplement, not a cure for infections. Sexually transmitted infections need proper testing and treatment. Check the label for lactose or other allergens.
Overdose
Taking extra doses may cause wind or loose stools. Serious harm is not expected.
Therapeutic Class
Probiotic (women's health supplement).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children, or in the refrigerator at 2 to 8°C if the label says so. Keep in the original pack to protect from moisture.
