Kabid Nawshadri
Indications
Kabid Nawshadri (Qurs or Majoon Kabid Naushadri) is a Unani compound preparation whose name refers to the liver (Kabid) and to Naushadar (Ammonium Chloride), one of its traditional ingredients, along with several herbs. It is traditionally used for a sluggish or enlarged liver, poor appetite, indigestion, gas and a feeling of heaviness after meals. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.
How It Works
In Unani medicine the ingredients are believed to open obstructions of the liver, improve digestion and stimulate appetite. Ammonium Chloride has a mild expectorant and acidifying effect, and the herbal components are traditionally used as digestives.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually after meals with water. Do not exceed the label amount or use for long periods without advice.
Interactions
- Ammonium Chloride can change the acidity of urine and may alter how the body removes some medicines, such as amphetamine type drugs and some salicylates.
- Avoid using with other acidifying salts or diuretics without advice.
- Tell your doctor about all herbal products you use, especially if you take medicines for the liver or kidneys.
Contraindications
- Severe liver disease or kidney disease (Ammonium Chloride can be harmful in these conditions).
- Known allergy to any ingredient.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding and young children, unless advised by a doctor.
Side Effects
Stomach upset, nausea or a burning feeling in the stomach can occur.
Get urgent medical help if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, confusion or unusual drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, rapid breathing or swelling of the abdomen.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established. Avoid use unless your doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
- Liver enlargement or jaundice needs proper medical diagnosis; do not rely on herbal treatment alone.
- People with heart, kidney or liver disease should consult a doctor before use.
- Stop use if stomach irritation develops.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause nausea, vomiting and, because of Ammonium Chloride, a change in the body's acid balance with rapid breathing and confusion. Seek medical help promptly.
