About the Medicine

Tamsulosin Hydrochloride

Indications

Tamsulosin Hydrochloride is used in men to relieve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), such as a weak stream, difficulty starting, frequent urination and needing to pass urine at night. Doctors may also use it to help small kidney stones pass.

How It Works

Tamsulosin is an alpha-blocker. It relaxes the muscle in the prostate and the neck of the bladder, so urine can flow more easily.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 0.4 mg once a day, taken at about the same time each day, usually after breakfast or the same meal. Swallow the capsule or tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew or open it. For kidney stones, use as prescribed.

Interactions

  • Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Ritonavir and similar strong enzyme blockers can raise tamsulosin levels; avoid or use only on medical advice.
  • Other alpha-blockers (for example Doxazosin, Prazosin) should not be taken together with it.
  • Sildenafil, Tadalafil and medicines for high blood pressure can increase the drop in blood pressure and dizziness.

Contraindications

Allergy to tamsulosin or any ingredient, a history of fainting or dizziness when standing up (orthostatic hypotension), and severe liver problems. It is not used in women or children.

Side Effects

Common: dizziness, especially when standing up; changes in ejaculation (less or no semen); runny or blocked nose; headache and tiredness.

Get urgent medical help for fainting, a painful erection lasting more than 4 hours, swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash with blisters or peeling skin.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Tamsulosin is for men only and is not used in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

  • If you are planning cataract or glaucoma surgery, tell the eye surgeon that you take or have taken tamsulosin, because it can affect the iris during surgery.
  • Stand up slowly, especially after the first doses; sit or lie down if you feel dizzy, and do not drive if affected.
  • The doctor should check for other prostate problems, including prostate cancer, before and during treatment.
  • Tell the doctor about severe kidney problems.

Overdose

Overdose can cause very low blood pressure, dizziness and fainting. Lie down with the legs raised and seek medical help immediately.

Therapeutic Class

Alpha-1 adrenoceptor blocker (alpha-blocker) for prostate symptoms.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
