About the Medicine

Hydrogen Peroxide 50%

Indications

Hydrogen Peroxide 50% is a highly concentrated solution of hydrogen peroxide used as a disinfectant and sanitising agent, not as a medicine to apply directly to the body. It is used, after proper dilution, to disinfect drinking water lines, equipment, farm and poultry houses, hatcheries and aquaculture systems, and for surface and instrument cleaning. Lower-strength products (around 3%) are the ones meant for cleaning minor wounds.

How It Works

Hydrogen peroxide releases oxygen when it breaks down. This reactive oxygen damages the cell walls, proteins and genetic material of bacteria, viruses, fungi and algae, killing them. It breaks down into water and oxygen, leaving no harmful residue when used correctly.

Dosage and Administration

Never use the 50% solution undiluted on skin, in the mouth or on animals. Always dilute exactly as directed on the label or by a veterinarian or water treatment specialist, using clean water and a measured amount. Add the peroxide to water, not water to the peroxide. Wear gloves, eye protection and protective clothing when handling it, and work in a well-ventilated area.

Interactions

Do not mix with other chemicals, especially chlorine products, acids, alkalis, metals (such as iron, copper or brass), organic materials, alcohol or other disinfectants, as this can cause dangerous reactions, heat, gas or fire. Its disinfecting effect may inactivate live vaccines or probiotics given through drinking water, so follow the label on timing.

Contraindications

Not for human or animal internal use in this strength. Do not apply undiluted to skin, eyes, wounds or mucous membranes.

Side Effects

At this strength it is corrosive. Contact can cause severe skin burns that turn the skin white, eye damage and blindness. Breathing the mist may irritate the nose, throat and lungs. Swallowing it can cause serious burns to the mouth and stomach and dangerous gas bubbles in the blood.

Get urgent medical help if it is swallowed, gets in the eyes or causes skin burns, or if someone has breathing difficulty after exposure. For eye or skin contact, rinse with plenty of clean water for at least 15 minutes while help is on the way.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid handling the concentrate where possible and must wear full protection if they do. Properly diluted and used as directed, it does not pose a specific risk.

Precautions and Warnings

Strong oxidiser: keep away from heat, sparks, flammable materials and direct sunlight. Keep in the original vented container and never return unused solution to the container. Clean spills with plenty of water. Observe any withdrawal or waiting period stated on the label for animals producing meat, eggs or milk. Keep well away from children and animals.

Overdose

Swallowing the concentrate is a medical emergency. Do not make the person vomit; rinse the mouth and seek emergency care immediately.

Therapeutic Class

Disinfectant and antiseptic (oxidising agent).

Storage

Store in the original vented container, upright, below 30°C, in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place away from flammable materials, and out of the reach of children and animals.
