Indications

Nandrolone is an anabolic steroid, a man-made hormone related to testosterone. In medicine it is used, under specialist care, to help treat anaemia caused by chronic kidney failure, and in some places to support weight gain or muscle and bone strength in certain wasting conditions and osteoporosis. It is not a medicine for bodybuilding or improving sports performance, and misuse is harmful.

How It Works

Nandrolone acts on androgen receptors to boost protein building in muscles and bones, and stimulates the kidneys and bone marrow to make more red blood cells. It has fewer masculinising effects than testosterone, but they still occur.

Dosage and Administration

Nandrolone is an oily injection given deep into a muscle by a doctor or nurse, usually every 1 to 4 weeks. The dose and length of treatment are as prescribed and depend on the condition.

Interactions

It can increase the effect of Warfarin and other blood thinners, so clotting tests may be needed. It may lower blood sugar in people taking Insulin or diabetes tablets. Use with Corticosteroids can increase fluid retention. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.

Contraindications

• Pregnancy
• Known or suspected prostate cancer or breast cancer in men
• Breast cancer in women with high blood calcium
• Severe liver disease
• Nephrotic syndrome
• Allergy to nandrolone or to the oil in the injection (for example peanut or arachis oil)

Side Effects

Women may develop deeper voice, facial or body hair growth, acne, enlarged clitoris and period changes; voice changes may be permanent. Men may notice breast swelling, reduced sperm count, smaller testicles and prostate problems. Other effects include fluid retention, raised cholesterol, liver problems, raised red blood cell count and mood changes.

Get urgent medical help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness or a painful swollen leg, yellow skin or eyes, a painful erection lasting a long time, severe swelling, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use in pregnancy, as it can cause masculinisation of a female baby. Do not use while breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Women should report voice changes early, since they may become permanent. Regular checks of liver function, blood count, cholesterol and, in men, the prostate are needed. Use with care in heart, kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy and migraine. Use in children may stop growth early. It is banned in sport.

Overdose

Single overdoses rarely cause immediate problems. Long-term misuse can damage the heart, liver and hormones. Seek medical advice.
