Probiotic Combination Bi-07 [10 Billion]
Indications
This is a probiotic containing the friendly bacterium Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis Bi-07, at about 10 billion live organisms (CFU) per dose. It is used to support healthy digestion and gut balance, to help reduce bloating and irregular bowel habits, and to support the gut during and after a course of antibiotics. Some studies also suggest benefits for immune support, but evidence varies.
How It Works
Bifidobacteria are natural residents of the healthy large bowel. Taking them as a supplement helps increase the number of helpful bacteria, which compete with harmful germs, produce substances that nourish the gut lining and help the gut work regularly.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label, usually 1 capsule or sachet once daily with water or a cool drink, ideally with a meal. Do not mix with hot drinks, as heat can kill the bacteria. If you are taking an antibiotic, take the probiotic at least 2 hours apart from it.
Interactions
- Antibiotics and antifungal medicines can reduce the benefit; separate doses by at least 2 hours.
- People taking medicines that weaken the immune system should ask their doctor before use.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to any ingredient (some products contain milk or other allergens; check the label).
- Severely weakened immune system, serious illness in intensive care or a central venous catheter, unless advised by a doctor.
Side Effects
Mild gas or bloating may occur in the first few days and usually settles with continued use.
Get urgent medical help if you develop high fever, chills or feel very unwell (rare infection in people with weak immunity), or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Bifidobacterium probiotics are generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but ask your doctor before starting any supplement.
Precautions and Warnings
- See a doctor if diarrhoea is severe, bloody, lasts more than 2 days, or comes with fever or dehydration.
- Ask a doctor before giving to premature or sick infants.
- Use within the expiry date, as the number of live bacteria falls over time.
Overdose
Taking more than recommended is unlikely to be harmful but may increase gas and bloating.
