About the Medicine

Activated Charcoal

Indications

Activated Charcoal is a fine black powder made from carbon that has been treated to give it a very large surface area. It is used to relieve wind (flatulence), bloating and some cases of mild diarrhoea. In hospitals it is also used as an emergency treatment for certain kinds of poisoning or drug overdose, where it is given by a doctor or nurse.

How It Works

Activated Charcoal is not absorbed into the body. As it passes through the stomach and gut, it binds (adsorbs) gases, toxins, bacteria products and many drugs onto its surface. These are then carried out of the body in the stool instead of being absorbed into the blood.

Dosage and Administration

For wind, bloating or mild diarrhoea: take as directed on the label, usually after meals with a glass of water. Do not use for more than a few days without medical advice.

For poisoning: this is an emergency. The dose is decided and given by a doctor or nurse, often as a drink or through a tube into the stomach. Do not try to treat a poisoning at home; go to hospital straight away.

Interactions

Activated Charcoal can bind other medicines taken by mouth and stop them working, including the oral contraceptive pill, Paracetamol, Digoxin, Theophylline and many others. Take other medicines at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after charcoal. It also reduces the effect of Ipecacuanha and some oral antidotes.

Contraindications

  • Blocked bowel or a gut that is not moving properly.
  • Poisoning with corrosive substances (strong acids or alkalis), petrol or kerosene, alcohol, iron or lithium, where charcoal does not help.
  • People who are drowsy or cannot protect their airway, unless a doctor gives it safely.

Side Effects

Common: black stools (harmless), constipation, and sometimes nausea or vomiting. Large doses can cause bowel blockage.

Get urgent medical help if you have severe stomach pain, a swollen tummy, no bowel movement with vomiting, or breathing problems after taking it.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Activated Charcoal is not absorbed, so it is generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding for short use. Still ask a doctor or pharmacist before using it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • It does not treat the cause of diarrhoea; drink plenty of fluids and see a doctor if diarrhoea lasts more than 2 days, or if there is blood in the stool or fever.
  • Do not give to young children without medical advice.
  • Remember it may stop your other medicines from working.

Overdose

Too much may cause constipation or bowel blockage. Seek medical advice if you have taken a large amount and feel unwell.

Therapeutic Class

Adsorbent; antiflatulent and antidote.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the container tightly closed, as it can absorb moisture and odours from the air.
