23 Herb Formula to Increase Breast Milk
Indications
This is a herbal formula made from a blend of 23 plant ingredients, intended for breastfeeding mothers to support breast milk supply. Herbs of this kind (galactagogues) are traditionally used when milk supply is felt to be low, and as a tonic after childbirth. The exact herbs are listed on the pack. Scientific evidence that herbal blends increase milk supply is limited.
How It Works
Many traditional milk boosting herbs contain plant compounds such as phytoestrogens and saponins, which are thought to influence prolactin and other hormones involved in milk production. Some also act as general tonics or digestive aids. How strongly this particular blend affects milk supply has not been properly studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered herbal practitioner. Do not take more than the recommended amount. The most effective ways to increase milk supply are frequent breastfeeding (including at night), a good latch, enough fluids and food, and rest. If supply does not improve within one to two weeks, or the baby is not gaining weight, see a doctor or breastfeeding counsellor.
Interactions
Because the blend contains many herbs, interactions are possible. Some milk boosting herbs, such as Fenugreek, can lower blood sugar and may affect blood thinners such as Warfarin; others may affect thyroid or blood pressure medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use, and show them the ingredient list.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any of the ingredients listed on the pack (for example, people allergic to peanuts or chickpeas may react to Fenugreek)
- Pregnancy
- Hormone sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, unless a doctor advises it
- Children
Side Effects
Possible effects include stomach upset, loose stools, wind, a maple syrup like smell in sweat or urine (if Fenugreek is included) and allergic skin reactions.
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe stomach pain. Also seek prompt advice if your baby becomes unusually sleepy or unsettled, develops a rash or diarrhoea, or feeds poorly.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use this product during pregnancy, as some milk boosting herbs can stimulate the womb. It is intended for breastfeeding mothers, but the safety of all the herbs for the nursing baby has not been fully studied. Use it only for a limited period, watch the baby for any changes, and ask a doctor if you are unsure.
Precautions and Warnings
Low milk supply is often due to infrequent feeding, poor latch, or a medical problem such as thyroid disease or retained placenta, which needs a doctor's assessment. Take advice before use if you have diabetes, asthma, thyroid disease or a bleeding disorder. Use only registered products from a reliable source.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset and diarrhoea. If someone has taken much more than the recommended amount, or a child has swallowed the product, contact a doctor or go to the nearest hospital and take the pack with you.
