Sharbat Sailan
Indications
Sharbat Sailan is a Unani herbal syrup. "Sailan" (sailan ur rahem) is the Unani term for leucorrhoea, a white or yellowish vaginal discharge. The syrup is traditionally used by women for excessive non infective white discharge and the weakness, backache and tiredness that may come with it. It contains astringent and tonic plant ingredients in a sugar base. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it does not treat vaginal infections.
How It Works
Unani practitioners regard the ingredients as astringent (tightening) and strengthening for the womb and reproductive tract. Some plants used in such syrups contain tannins, which have a mild astringent effect. How the combination works in the body has not been properly studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Shake the bottle well and use the measuring cup provided. Do not take more than the recommended amount. If the discharge does not improve within two to three weeks, see a doctor.
Interactions
No specific interactions are well documented. Because the syrup contains sugar, it may affect blood sugar control in women taking Insulin, Metformin or other diabetes medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any of the ingredients listed on the pack
- Pregnancy, unless a practitioner advises it
- Poorly controlled diabetes, unless a doctor advises it
Side Effects
Side effects are not well recorded. Some women may have constipation, stomach discomfort, nausea or allergic skin reactions.
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, heavy vaginal bleeding, severe lower stomach pain, or discharge together with fever.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Some discharge is normal in pregnancy, but any change needs a doctor's check. The safety of this syrup in pregnancy has not been established, so do not use it unless a qualified practitioner advises it. Ask a doctor before use while breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
Some clear or white discharge is normal and changes during the monthly cycle. See a doctor if the discharge is yellow, green or grey, smells bad, is thick like curd, is blood stained, or comes with itching, burning, pain on passing urine, pelvic pain or fever, as these suggest an infection that needs specific treatment. Discharge after the menopause always needs checking. Women with diabetes should note the sugar content.
Overdose
Taking too much is unlikely to be serious but may cause stomach upset and raise blood sugar. If someone has taken much more than the recommended amount, or a child has swallowed a large amount, contact a doctor or go to the nearest hospital and take the bottle with you.
