About the Medicine

Lincomycin Base

Indications

Lincomycin is an antibiotic injection used for serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, mainly in people who cannot take Penicillin. Uses include infections of the skin and soft tissues, bones and joints (osteomyelitis), the respiratory tract and blood (septicaemia).

How It Works

Lincomycin attaches to the part of the bacterial cell that makes proteins (the ribosome). Without new proteins the bacteria cannot grow or multiply, and the body's defences can clear the infection. It does not work against viruses such as colds or flu.

Dosage and Administration

Lincomycin injection is given by a doctor or nurse into a muscle or slowly into a vein as a diluted drip. It must never be injected undiluted directly into a vein quickly. The dose and length of treatment depend on the infection, age, weight and kidney and liver function and are set by the doctor.

Interactions

Lincomycin can strengthen the effect of muscle relaxants used in anaesthesia. Erythromycin may reduce its effect, so they are not used together. Kaolin-containing antidiarrhoeal medicines reduce absorption of the oral form. Tell the doctor about all medicines you take.

Contraindications

Do not use in people allergic to lincomycin or Clindamycin. Not used for minor infections or viral infections. The injection may contain benzyl alcohol, so it is avoided in newborn babies.

Side Effects

Common effects include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, rash and itching. Pain or hardness at the injection site can occur. Low blood pressure or heart problems can occur if it is given too fast into a vein.

Get urgent medical help for severe or bloody diarrhoea, which may be a serious bowel infection (Clostridioides difficile colitis), even weeks after treatment ends. Also seek help at once for swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, blistering or peeling skin, yellow skin or eyes, or fainting.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Lincomycin crosses the placenta. It is used in pregnancy only if clearly needed and when safer choices are not suitable. It passes into breast milk and may upset the baby's gut; the doctor will advise whether to continue breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Use with care in people with a history of bowel disease such as colitis, liver or kidney disease, asthma or many allergies. Long courses need blood, liver and kidney tests. Do not take medicines that stop diarrhoea without a doctor's advice.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely as it is given by health professionals. Excess may increase side effects; treatment is supportive. Dialysis does not remove much lincomycin.

Therapeutic Class

Antibiotic (lincosamide).
