Saroglitazar
Indications
Saroglitazar is used in adults with type 2 diabetes who also have high triglycerides (a type of blood fat) that are not controlled by statins alone, a condition called diabetic dyslipidaemia. It is also used in some countries for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD and NASH). It is used together with diet and exercise.
How It Works
Saroglitazar activates two switches in the body called PPAR-alpha and PPAR-gamma. PPAR-alpha helps the liver burn fat and lowers triglycerides, while PPAR-gamma makes the body respond better to insulin, which helps lower blood sugar.
Dosage and Administration
Usual adult dose: 4 mg once daily, taken before breakfast, or as prescribed. Swallow the tablet with water. Keep following your diet and exercise plan and continue other diabetes medicines unless your doctor changes them.
Interactions
- When used with Insulin or sulfonylureas such as Glimepiride or Gliclazide, blood sugar may drop too low; the dose of these may need lowering.
- Use with other fibrates such as Fenofibrate or with Pioglitazone is not recommended.
- Tell your doctor about all medicines, including Atorvastatin, Rosuvastatin and herbal products.
Contraindications
- Allergy to saroglitazar.
- Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Severe heart failure.
Side Effects
Common: stomach upset, acid reflux, mild tummy pain, tiredness, dizziness and mild weakness. Some people notice weight change or mild swelling. Low blood sugar can occur with other diabetes medicines.
Get urgent medical help for signs of severe low blood sugar (shaking, sweating, confusion, fainting), unexplained muscle pain with dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, sudden breathlessness or swelling of the legs.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Saroglitazar should not be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as safety has not been established. Women who could become pregnant should discuss contraception with their doctor.
