About the Medicine

Multivitamin & Multimineral [a-Z Syrup Preparation]

Indications

Multivitamin and multimineral syrup is a liquid supplement that provides a range of vitamins (such as A, B group, C, D and E) and minerals (such as zinc, iron, calcium, iodine or others, depending on the product). It is used to prevent or correct vitamin and mineral shortages in children and adults with poor appetite or poor diet, during recovery from illness, during growth spurts, and in older people. The syrup form is easier for children and people who have difficulty swallowing tablets.

How It Works

Vitamins and minerals are needed in small amounts for many body processes. B vitamins help turn food into energy, vitamin A supports vision and immunity, vitamin C helps healing and iron absorption, vitamin D and calcium support bones and teeth, zinc supports growth and immunity, and iron is needed to make red blood cells. The syrup tops up what the diet may be missing.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by your doctor or pharmacist; the amount depends on age and the product's strength. Shake the bottle well and measure each dose with the measuring cup or spoon provided, not a kitchen spoon. It is usually taken once or twice a day, preferably after a meal. Do not give more than the recommended amount, and do not combine with other vitamin or iron supplements unless advised.

Interactions

If the syrup contains iron, zinc or calcium, it can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (such as Doxycycline, Tetracycline and Ciprofloxacin) and Levothyroxine; take these at least 2 hours apart. Antacids, tea and milk may reduce iron absorption. Vitamin K, if present, can reduce the effect of Warfarin. High doses of vitamin B6 may reduce the effect of Levodopa when taken alone. Tell your doctor about other medicines you take.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient, or if you have high levels of vitamin A or D, high blood calcium, iron overload conditions (such as haemochromatosis or regular blood transfusions), or severe kidney disease, unless your doctor advises.

Side Effects

Most people have no side effects at the recommended dose. Some may get mild nausea, stomach upset, constipation or diarrhoea, or a change in urine colour (bright yellow from B vitamins, which is harmless). Iron-containing syrups can darken stools and may stain teeth slightly; rinsing the mouth after use helps.

Get urgent medical help if you notice an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, or if a child has swallowed a large amount, especially of an iron-containing product.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Many multivitamins are safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding at normal doses, but products made for general use may contain too much vitamin A. Use a product meant for pregnancy, or ask your doctor or pharmacist before using it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Supplements do not replace a balanced diet.
  • Check the label for sugar content if you have diabetes.
  • Keep separate from other vitamin products to avoid taking too much vitamin A, D or iron.
  • Use within the time stated on the bottle after opening.

Overdose

Taking much more than recommended, especially for a long time, can cause vitamin A or D toxicity (headache, vomiting, bone pain, high calcium). A large amount of an iron-containing syrup swallowed by a child is dangerous. Seek medical help immediately.
