About the Medicine

Trifarotene

Indications

Trifarotene is a prescription cream used to treat acne vulgaris (common acne) on the face and on the trunk (chest, shoulders and back) in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older. It helps both blackheads and whiteheads (comedones) and red, inflamed spots.

How It Works

Trifarotene is a fourth-generation topical retinoid, a medicine related to vitamin A. It acts mainly on a receptor in the skin called RAR-gamma. This normalises the way skin cells shed inside the hair follicles, so pores are less likely to block, and it reduces inflammation. Existing blocked pores clear gradually and new spots form less often.

Dosage and Administration

Use once a day in the evening, on clean, dry skin. Apply a thin layer to the whole affected area of the face (about a pea-sized amount for the face), and a thin layer to the affected areas of the chest, shoulders or back, as prescribed. Avoid the eyes, lips, nostrils and broken skin, and wash hands after use. Use a moisturiser as needed and a sunscreen during the day. Improvement usually takes 4 to 12 weeks.

Interactions

  • Avoid using other irritating skin products at the same time, such as other retinoids, Benzoyl Peroxide in high strength, Salicylic Acid peels, harsh scrubs, astringents, products containing alcohol, and waxing on treated areas, unless your doctor advises.
  • No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are expected, as very little is absorbed.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Trifarotene or any ingredient of the cream.
  • Pregnancy and women planning a pregnancy.

Side Effects

Skin irritation is common, especially in the first 2 to 4 weeks: redness, dryness, scaling, stinging or burning, and itching. Sunburn may happen more easily. These effects usually lessen with continued use; your doctor may advise using it less often for a while.

Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips, eyes or throat, difficulty breathing, or severe blistering or burning of the skin.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy: retinoids taken by mouth are known to cause birth defects, and although very little Trifarotene is absorbed through the skin, it is not recommended. Stop using it and see your doctor if you become pregnant. During breastfeeding, use only on a doctor's advice and do not apply it to the chest area to avoid contact with the baby.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Avoid sun lamps and limit sun exposure; use sunscreen of SPF 30 or more.
  • Do not apply to cuts, scrapes, eczema or sunburned skin.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth and inside the nose; rinse with water if contact occurs.
  • Do not use more than prescribed: it will not work faster and may cause more irritation.

Overdose

Applying too much can cause marked redness, peeling and discomfort. Wash the area with mild soap and water. If the cream is swallowed, contact a doctor.
