About the Medicine

Luliconazole

Indications

Luliconazole is an antifungal applied to the skin to treat fungal skin infections, such as:

  • athlete's foot (tinea pedis), including infection between the toes;
  • jock itch (tinea cruris) in the groin;
  • ringworm of the body (tinea corporis);
  • some other yeast and fungal skin infections, and fungal nail infection with a nail solution, as advised by the doctor.

How It Works

Luliconazole is an azole antifungal. It blocks an enzyme the fungus needs to make ergosterol, a key part of its cell wall. Without it the fungus cannot grow and dies.

Dosage and Administration

  • Cream (usually 1%), adults: apply a thin layer once a day to the affected skin and about 2 to 3 cm of the healthy skin around it.
  • Athlete's foot: usually once a day for 2 weeks.
  • Jock itch and body ringworm: usually once a day for 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Nail solution: as prescribed, often for several months.
  • Children: as prescribed.

Clean and dry the area first. Wash your hands after use unless the hands are being treated. Use it for the full time advised, even if the skin looks better, to stop the infection coming back.

Interactions

Very little is absorbed through the skin, so interactions with tablets are unlikely. Do not put other creams or ointments on the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises it.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Luliconazole, other azole antifungals, or any ingredient of the cream

Side Effects

Side effects are usually mild and at the place of use: irritation, itching, redness, burning or dryness. Contact dermatitis (an allergic skin rash) can happen.

Stop using it and get medical help at once for: swelling of the face, lips or throat, trouble breathing, or a spreading, blistering or severe rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Only a small amount is absorbed, but there is limited information in pregnancy, so use only if your doctor advises it. During breastfeeding it can usually be used on small areas if the doctor agrees; do not apply it to the breast.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For use on the skin only. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth, nose and vagina.
  • Do not cover the area with a tight bandage unless advised.
  • Keep the skin clean and dry; change socks and underwear daily and do not share towels.
  • See a doctor if there is no improvement after 2 weeks.

Overdose

Using too much on the skin is unlikely to cause harm but may increase irritation. If it is swallowed, rinse the mouth and contact a doctor.

Therapeutic Class

Topical antifungal (azole, imidazole group).
