Magaldrate
Indications
Magaldrate is an antacid used for quick relief of heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach and stomach discomfort linked to excess acid, including symptoms of acid reflux and peptic ulcer. It is often combined with Simethicone to relieve gas and bloating.
How It Works
Magaldrate is a combined aluminium and magnesium compound. It neutralises stomach acid, which soothes the lining of the food pipe and stomach. The aluminium part tends to cause constipation and the magnesium part tends to loosen stools, so the two balance each other.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: usually 1 to 2 tablets chewed well, or 5 to 10 ml of suspension, between meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times a day, or as directed on the pack. Shake the suspension well before use.
Do not use for more than 2 weeks without medical advice. Children: only as advised by a doctor.
Interactions
Antacids can reduce the absorption of many medicines, including Tetracycline and Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin and similar antibiotics, iron tablets, Levothyroxine, Digoxin, Ketoconazole and some HIV medicines. Take other medicines at least 2 hours before or after Magaldrate.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Magaldrate or any ingredient of the product.
- Severe kidney disease.
- Low blood phosphate levels.
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Mild diarrhoea or constipation can occur. Long-term high doses may lower phosphate levels, causing weakness and bone pain.
Get urgent medical help if you have black or tarry stools, vomit blood, severe or persistent stomach pain, chest pain spreading to the arm or jaw, or difficulty swallowing. These need a doctor, not an antacid.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Normal doses for short periods are generally considered safe in pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Avoid long-term high doses unless your doctor advises them.
Precautions and Warnings
Use with care in kidney disease, because aluminium and magnesium can build up in the body. See a doctor if symptoms last more than 2 weeks, keep coming back, or come with weight loss, vomiting or trouble swallowing. People on a low-sodium diet should check the label.
Overdose
Too much may cause diarrhoea or constipation. In people with kidney problems, high magnesium levels can cause weakness, drowsiness, low blood pressure and slow breathing; seek medical help.
Therapeutic Class
Antacid.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze the suspension.
