Herbs Argan Oil
Indications
This is a herbal hair oil based on Argan oil, the oil pressed from the kernels of the Argan tree (Argania spinosa) of Morocco, usually blended with other plant oils or herbal extracts. It is used on the hair and scalp to moisturise dry, frizzy or damaged hair, reduce split ends and breakage, add softness and shine, and ease a dry, flaky scalp. Argan oil is also used on dry skin. Claims that it reduces hair fall are not well proven.
How It Works
Argan oil is rich in fatty acids (mainly oleic and linoleic acid), vitamin E (tocopherols) and plant antioxidants. It forms a light film on the hair that seals in moisture, smooths the outer layer of the hair and reduces friction, so hair tangles and breaks less. On the scalp and skin it helps restore the natural barrier and reduce dryness.
Dosage and Administration
For external use only. Put a few drops on the palms, rub them together and work through damp or dry hair, focusing on the ends. For scalp care, massage a small amount into the scalp, leave for an hour or overnight and wash out with a mild shampoo. Use two or three times a week, or as directed on the label.
Interactions
No interactions with medicines are expected. If you use medicated scalp products such as Minoxidil, apply them as directed and ask a doctor or pharmacist about using oil at the same time.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Argan oil, tree nuts or any other ingredient in the product.
- Broken, infected or badly inflamed scalp skin.
Side Effects
Argan oil is usually very well tolerated. Rarely it may cause itching, redness or a rash, especially in people with nut allergies. Heavy use may make hair look greasy or cause pimples along the hairline. Do a patch test before first use.
Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, eyes or lips, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Argan oil used on the hair and skin is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If the product contains added essential oils, check with a doctor.
Precautions and Warnings
- Avoid contact with the eyes; rinse with water if this happens.

Overdose
Overdose is not expected with use on the hair. If a child swallows a large amount, it may cause stomach upset; contact a doctor or the nearest hospital if there is vomiting, coughing or breathing difficulty.
