About the Medicine

Herbs Marula Oil

Indications

This is a herbal hair oil based on Marula oil, the oil pressed from the kernels of the Marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea) of southern Africa, usually blended with other plant oils or herbal extracts. It is used on the hair and scalp to moisturise dry, brittle or frizzy hair, reduce breakage and split ends, add softness and shine, and soothe a dry scalp. Marula oil is also used as a light moisturiser for dry skin. Claims that it reduces hair fall are not well proven.

How It Works

Marula oil is rich in oleic acid and other fatty acids, together with natural antioxidants such as vitamin E and plant polyphenols. It is a light oil that spreads easily, coats the hair to hold in moisture and smooth the hair surface, and helps protect hair from damage caused by heat, sun and washing. On the scalp and skin it supports the natural moisture barrier.

Dosage and Administration

For external use only. Warm a few drops between the palms and smooth through damp or dry hair, focusing on the lengths and ends. For scalp care, massage a small amount into the scalp, leave for an hour or overnight, then wash with a mild shampoo. Use two or three times a week, or as directed on the label.

Interactions

No interactions with medicines are expected. If you use medicated scalp products such as Minoxidil or anti-dandruff shampoos, ask a doctor or pharmacist about using an oil at the same time.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Marula oil, nuts or any other ingredient in the product.
  • Broken, infected or badly inflamed scalp skin.

Side Effects

Marula oil is usually well tolerated. Rarely it may cause itching, redness or a rash. Using too much may leave hair greasy or block pores along the hairline. Do a patch test before first use.

Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, eyes or lips, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Marula oil used on the hair and skin is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If the product contains added essential oils, check with a doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Avoid contact with the eyes; rinse with water if this happens.
  • Do not swallow cosmetic hair oil.
  • See a doctor for sudden or patchy hair loss, or a scalp that is red, scaly, painful or oozing.

Overdose

Overdose is not expected with use on the hair. If a child swallows a large amount, it may cause stomach upset; contact a doctor or the nearest hospital if there is vomiting, coughing or breathing difficulty.
