Cucumis Melo Fruit Extract
Indications
Cucumis melo fruit extract is a dried extract of a special variety of melon (cantaloupe) that is naturally rich in the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD). It is used as a dietary supplement to support the body's own antioxidant defences. It is promoted for tiredness and stress, skin health and sun protection support, and general wellbeing. Some small studies suggest benefits for perceived stress, fatigue and skin, but the evidence is limited and it is not a treatment for any disease.
How It Works
Superoxide dismutase is an enzyme that the body uses to neutralise superoxide, a harmful form of oxygen (a free radical) produced during normal metabolism and by sun, pollution and stress. SOD on its own is largely broken down in the stomach, so many supplements combine the melon extract with a protective coating, often wheat gliadin. The extract is thought to encourage the body to make more of its own antioxidant enzymes.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label, usually once a day with water, with or without food. Benefits, if any, may take several weeks to appear. Do not take more than the recommended amount.
Interactions
No important interactions with medicines are known. If you take immunosuppressant medicines or medicines for cancer, ask your doctor before using antioxidant supplements, as high doses of antioxidants may affect some treatments.
Contraindications
- Allergy to melon or any ingredient in the product.
- Coeliac disease or wheat allergy, if the product contains wheat gliadin.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Mild stomach upset, nausea or loose stools may occur. People sensitive to wheat may react to gliadin-containing products.
Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing or a widespread rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid it during these times unless a doctor advises otherwise.
Precautions and Warnings
- Supplements do not replace a balanced diet, sun protection or prescribed medicines.
- Persistent tiredness may be a sign of conditions such as anaemia, thyroid disease or diabetes; see a doctor if it continues.
- Check the label for wheat or other allergens.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely to cause serious harm, but large amounts may cause stomach upset. If a child swallows a large amount, contact a doctor or the nearest hospital for advice.
