What It Is Used For

Metronidazole treats infections caused by certain bacteria and parasites: amoebic dysentery, giardiasis, bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, dental and gum infections, some stomach and pelvic infections, and, with other medicines, H. pylori.

How to Take It

Adults: commonly 400 mg two or three times a day after food, usually for 5 to 7 days, depending on the infection. Some infections are treated with a single larger dose. Children: dose by weight as suspension. Swallow tablets whole with water. Finish the full course even if you feel better. Only take antibiotics prescribed for you; misuse makes bacteria resistant.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to metronidazole or tinidazole, or if you have taken disulfiram in the last 2 weeks.

Side Effects

Common: nausea, metallic taste, loss of appetite, stomach upset and dark urine (harmless). Rare: numbness or tingling in hands or feet, dizziness, fits or confusion, especially with long courses. Tell your doctor if these happen.

Precautions

Do not drink alcohol while taking it and for at least 2 days after the last dose: it can cause severe flushing, vomiting and a fast heartbeat. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, epilepsy or a nerve disorder.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Use only if a doctor advises it, especially in the first 3 months. While breastfeeding, the doctor may advise a short break after a single large dose.

Interactions

It increases the effect of warfarin and can raise lithium levels. Alcohol and disulfiram cause serious reactions. Phenytoin and phenobarbital can make it less effective.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children. Once mixed, keep suspensions as the label says and throw away what is left after the course.
