About the Medicine

Simethicone

Indications

Simethicone is used to relieve trapped wind, bloating, fullness and wind pain. Drops are used for wind and colic in babies. It is also combined with antacids such as Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide for acidity with gas, and doctors sometimes give it before an endoscopy or ultrasound scan to reduce gas bubbles.

How It Works

It is an anti-foaming agent. It lowers the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and gut so small bubbles join into larger ones that are passed more easily by belching or as wind. It is not absorbed into the body.

Dosage and Administration

Strengths differ between products, so follow the label. Adults: chewable tablets or liquid are usually taken after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times a day, without going over the maximum daily amount on the pack. Chew tablets well. Babies and children: drops or liquid only as directed on the pack or by a doctor, often given before or with feeds. Shake liquids well.

Interactions

Simethicone may reduce the absorption of Levothyroxine; take them at least 4 hours apart. When combined with antacids, the antacid part can reduce the absorption of other medicines, so take other medicines 2 hours apart.

Contraindications

Allergy to simethicone or any ingredient, and known or suspected bowel blockage.

Side Effects

Side effects are very uncommon; occasionally mild stomach upset or loose stools. Get urgent medical help for a serious allergic reaction, severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, blood in the stool, a swollen hard tummy, or a baby who cries without stopping, will not feed, or has fever or vomiting.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Because it is not absorbed, it is considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding at usual doses.

Precautions and Warnings

See a doctor if symptoms last more than a week, keep coming back, or come with weight loss, bleeding or a change in bowel habit. Some products contain sugar or sweeteners; check the label if you have diabetes or phenylketonuria.

Overdose

Simethicone is unlikely to cause harm in overdose because it is not absorbed. If a combination product with antacids has been taken in large amounts, seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Antiflatulent (anti-foaming agent).

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze liquids.
