About the Medicine

Mirogabalin

Indications

Mirogabalin is used to treat nerve pain (neuropathic pain), such as:

  • Painful diabetic nerve damage (burning, tingling or shooting pain in the feet and legs).
  • Pain that continues after shingles (post-herpetic neuralgia).
  • Other types of nerve pain, as decided by the doctor.

How It Works

Mirogabalin attaches to a part of nerve cells (the alpha-2-delta subunit of calcium channels) and calms overactive nerves. This reduces the release of pain-signalling chemicals, easing burning and shooting nerve pain. It works in a similar way to Pregabalin.

Dosage and Administration

  • Adults: as prescribed. Treatment usually starts at 5 mg twice a day and is increased slowly, about once a week, to the dose that works, commonly 10 to 15 mg twice a day.
  • People with kidney problems need lower doses, set by the doctor.
  • Not for children.

Take with or without food at about the same times each day. Do not stop suddenly; the doctor will reduce the dose gradually.

Interactions

  • Alcohol, sleeping tablets, Lorazepam-type medicines, opioid painkillers such as Tramadol, and sedating antihistamines increase drowsiness and dizziness, and can slow breathing.
  • Probenecid and Cimetidine can raise its levels.
  • Do not take with Pregabalin or Gabapentin.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to mirogabalin or any ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Common: sleepiness, dizziness, swelling of the hands or feet, weight gain, unsteadiness, blurred vision and constipation. These are often worse when starting or increasing the dose.

Get urgent medical help for slowed or difficult breathing, severe drowsiness or confusion, falls with injury, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or any thoughts of harming yourself.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little information on use in pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is not recommended unless a doctor decides the benefit clearly outweighs the risk.

Precautions and Warnings

  • It may cause dizziness and sleepiness; do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
  • Older people are more at risk of falls; take care when getting up.
  • Use lower doses in kidney disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had problems with misuse of medicines or alcohol.
  • Take care in heart failure, as it can cause fluid retention.

Overdose

Overdose may cause severe sleepiness, confusion, unsteadiness, agitation and slowed breathing. Get urgent medical help.
