About the Medicine

Astragalus

Indications

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus, known in Chinese medicine as Huang Qi) is a plant whose dried root is used in traditional Chinese medicine and as a herbal supplement. It is traditionally used to support the immune system, help prevent colds and respiratory infections, reduce tiredness and weakness, and support recovery after illness. It is also promoted for heart, kidney and blood sugar support. Some studies suggest benefits, but the evidence is limited and of mixed quality.

How It Works

Astragalus root contains polysaccharides, saponins (astragalosides) and flavonoids. In laboratory and animal studies these stimulate certain immune cells, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and may help protect the heart and kidneys. How strongly these effects occur in people is not well established.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label, usually once or twice a day with water, with or after food. It is often used in courses of a few weeks. Do not take more than the label recommends.

Interactions

  • Immunosuppressant medicines such as Cyclosporine, Tacrolimus, Azathioprine or corticosteroids: Astragalus may stimulate the immune system and reduce their effect.
  • Lithium: Astragalus may increase urine flow and change lithium levels.
  • Medicines for diabetes and high blood pressure: possible extra lowering of blood sugar or blood pressure.
  • Blood thinners such as Warfarin: possible increased bleeding risk.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.

Contraindications

  • Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis, unless a doctor advises it.
  • Organ transplant recipients taking anti-rejection medicines.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Allergy to Astragalus or plants of the pea family.

Side Effects

Astragalus is usually well tolerated. Some people may have stomach upset, bloating, loose stools, a stuffy nose or a skin rash.

Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, or unusual bleeding or bruising.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid it during these times unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Some wild Astragalus species are toxic to animals and people; use only registered products made from Astragalus membranaceus.
  • Stop use about two weeks before planned surgery.
  • Ongoing tiredness or frequent infections should be checked by a doctor.

Overdose

Overdose information is limited. Large amounts may cause stomach upset and, in theory, reduce immune activity. If a large amount has been taken, or a child has swallowed it, contact a doctor or the nearest hospital and take the pack with you.
