Montelukast
What It Is Used For
Montelukast blocks substances in the body that narrow the airways and cause allergy symptoms. It is used to prevent asthma symptoms, to prevent asthma triggered by exercise, and to relieve allergic rhinitis. It does not stop an asthma attack that has already started; use your reliever inhaler for that.
How to Take It
Adults and children 15 and over: 10 mg once a day in the evening. Children 6 to 14 years: 5 mg chewable tablet. Children 2 to 5 years: 4 mg chewable tablet or granules. Take it every day, even when you feel well. Do not stop your other asthma medicines unless the doctor says so.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not take it if you are allergic to montelukast.
Side Effects
Common: headache, stomach pain and colds. Some people, including children, have changes in mood or behaviour: bad dreams, sleep problems, restlessness, anxiety, low mood or, rarely, thoughts of self-harm. Stop it and contact a doctor at once if this happens.
Precautions
Chewable tablets for children may contain phenylalanine, which matters for people with phenylketonuria.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Use only if a doctor advises it.
Interactions
Phenobarbital, phenytoin and rifampicin can make it work less well.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
