Mosquito Repellent Citronella, Eucalyptus Oil, Peppermint Oil
Indications
This is a plant-based mosquito repellent for use on the skin, made with Citronella oil, Eucalyptus oil and Peppermint oil. It is used to help keep mosquitoes and some other biting insects away and so reduce bites. Natural oil repellents usually protect for a shorter time than repellents such as DEET, so they need to be reapplied more often. In areas with dengue, malaria or chikungunya, a repellent is only one part of protection, along with nets, screens and covering clothing.
How It Works
The strong-smelling plant oils mask the body odours and carbon dioxide that attract mosquitoes and interfere with the insects' sense of smell, so they are less likely to land and bite. The effect fades as the oils evaporate, usually within one to two hours, depending on the product, sweating and heat.
Dosage and Administration
For external use on the skin only. Apply a thin, even layer to exposed skin and rub in; do not apply under clothing. For the face, put it on your hands first and then spread it on the face, avoiding the eyes and mouth. Reapply as directed on the label, and after swimming or heavy sweating. Wash treated skin with soap and water when protection is no longer needed. Adults should apply it on children's skin themselves and avoid the children's hands.
Interactions
No interactions with medicines are expected. If you also use sunscreen, apply the sunscreen first and the repellent afterwards. Avoid using other strong skin products on the same area at the same time.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Citronella, Eucalyptus, Peppermint or other essential oils.
- Babies and young children, unless the label states the product is suitable for their age.
- Broken, irritated or sunburnt skin.
Side Effects
Some people may have skin redness, itching, burning or a rash, especially with sensitive skin. Eye contact causes stinging and watering. Breathing in the strong smell may irritate the nose or trigger cough in sensitive people.
Get urgent medical help if someone swallows the product, especially a child, or if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash. Also seek medical care if you develop fever, severe headache, joint pain or rash after mosquito bites, as these may be signs of dengue or malaria.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Plant oil repellents used on the skin as directed are generally considered acceptable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and preventing mosquito bites is important at these times. Do not apply to the breast before feeding. Ask a doctor if you are unsure.
Precautions and Warnings
- Do not swallow. Eucalyptus and Peppermint oils can cause serious poisoning, including seizures, if swallowed.
- Keep away from the eyes, mouth, cuts and wounds.
- Do not apply near flames; some products are flammable.
- Do a patch test on a small area of skin before first use.
- Use mosquito nets, especially for babies and young children.
Overdose
Applying too much to the skin may cause irritation; wash it off with soap and water. Swallowing the product is dangerous and may cause vomiting, drowsiness, breathing problems or seizures. Seek emergency medical help immediately and take the pack with you.
