Sharbat Mavez
Indications
Sharbat Mavez is a classical Unani syrup (sharbat) made mainly from Mavez Munaqqa (large dried raisins, the dried fruit of the grape vine) together with other herbs in a sugar base. It is traditionally used as a mild, gentle laxative for constipation, for dry cough and throat irritation, and as a nourishing tonic during weakness or recovery from illness. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.
How It Works
Raisins contain natural sugars, fibre and plant compounds such as sorbitol and tartaric acid, which draw water into the bowel and soften the stool, giving a mild laxative effect. The thick, sweet syrup coats and soothes the throat. In Unani theory the preparation is described as moistening and nourishing. The other herbs in the formula may add soothing or laxative effects.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Syrups like this are usually taken one to three times a day, often mixed with water. Shake the bottle well before use and use the measuring cup provided. Do not use for long periods for constipation without advice.
Interactions
- Medicines for diabetes: the sugar content can raise blood sugar.
- Other laxatives: added effect, which may cause diarrhoea.
No other important interactions are known. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Allergy to grapes, raisins or any other ingredient.
- Uncontrolled diabetes, because of the high sugar content.
- Bowel blockage or severe, unexplained stomach pain.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Some people may have loose stools, bloating or gas. The sugar content may raise blood sugar and can harm teeth with frequent use.
Get urgent medical help if you have severe stomach pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, ongoing diarrhoea, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Raisins are a normal food and are generally safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Because the full formula may contain other herbs, ask a doctor before using this syrup during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- People with diabetes should check the sugar content and monitor blood sugar.
- Constipation lasting more than two weeks, or with weight loss, blood in the stool or a change in bowel habit, needs medical assessment.
- A cough lasting more than three weeks, or with fever, blood or breathlessness, should be checked by a doctor.
- Rinse the mouth or brush teeth after frequent use.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps and high blood sugar in people with diabetes. If a large amount has been taken, contact a doctor or the nearest hospital and take the pack with you.
