About the Medicine

Multivitamin & Multimineral [a-Z Juniors Syrup Preparation]

Indications

This is a children's multivitamin and multimineral syrup containing a wide range of vitamins (such as A, B group, C, D and E) and minerals (such as zinc, iodine and, in many products, iron). It is used to:

  • Support normal growth and development when a child's diet is poor or limited, for example in picky eaters or children with low appetite.
  • Help recovery after illness.
  • Prevent vitamin and mineral shortfalls during periods of fast growth.

It supports a healthy diet and does not replace it. It is not a treatment for a diagnosed deficiency unless a doctor says so.

How It Works

Vitamins and minerals are needed in small amounts for energy, growth, healthy blood, strong bones and teeth, and a working immune system. The syrup tops up what the child may not be getting from food.

Dosage and Administration

Give the dose printed on the pack for the child's age, commonly 5 ml once a day, or as advised by the doctor. Use the measuring cup or spoon supplied, not a kitchen spoon. It can be given with or after food, which may reduce stomach upset. Do not give more than the stated dose, and do not give it to babies younger than the age stated on the pack unless a doctor advises.

Interactions

  • Iron, zinc and calcium can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (Tetracyclines and quinolones such as Ciprofloxacin) and of Levothyroxine. Keep a gap of at least 2 hours.
  • Do not give with other vitamin or iron products unless a doctor advises, to avoid getting too much vitamin A, vitamin D or iron.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient.
  • Conditions with too much iron in the body (for example haemochromatosis or frequent blood transfusions, as in thalassaemia), if the product contains iron.
  • High calcium levels in the blood, or too much vitamin A or D.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Some children have mild stomach upset, nausea, constipation or loose stools. Products with iron can make stools dark, which is harmless. Urine may turn bright yellow from vitamin B2, which is also harmless.

Get urgent medical help if a child has signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing) or has swallowed much more than the stated dose.

Pregnancy and Lactation

This product is made for children. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use a supplement made for pregnancy, as advised by their doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Keep the bottle out of children's reach; children may drink it because of its sweet taste.
  • Ask a doctor before use if the child has kidney disease, diabetes (the syrup usually contains sugar) or any long-term illness.
  • If a child is very pale, tired or not growing well, see a doctor rather than relying on a supplement.

Overdose

Swallowing a large amount can be dangerous, mainly because of iron, vitamin A and vitamin D. Iron poisoning is a common cause of serious poisoning in young children. If a child drinks much more than the stated dose, take the child to hospital straight away with the bottle, even if the child seems well.

Therapeutic Class

Multivitamin and multimineral supplement for children.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the cap tightly closed and use within the period stated on the pack after opening.
