Tolperisone Hydrochloride
Indications
Tolperisone is a muscle relaxant used to ease muscle stiffness and spasm (spasticity), for example after a stroke, and painful muscle spasm linked to problems of the spine and joints, such as back and neck pain.
How It Works
It acts on the brain and spinal cord to calm the overactive nerve signals that make muscles stiff and tight. Unlike many muscle relaxants, it usually causes little drowsiness.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: usually 50 mg three times a day, which the doctor may increase gradually up to 150 mg three times a day depending on the response. Take after meals with a glass of water. Children: only as prescribed.
Interactions
It may increase the effect of Niflumic acid and some other anti-inflammatory medicines. Take care when using it with other muscle relaxants, sleeping tablets or alcohol, as dizziness and weakness may increase. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.
Contraindications
- Allergy to tolperisone, Eperisone or any ingredient of the product.
- Myasthenia gravis (a disease that causes muscle weakness).
- Breastfeeding.
Side Effects
Common: muscle weakness, dizziness, sleepiness, headache, stomach upset, nausea and low blood pressure. Get urgent medical help if you notice an allergic reaction such as skin rash, hives, flushing, swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or fainting. Stop the medicine and do not take it again.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Avoid during pregnancy, especially the first three months, unless the doctor decides it is clearly needed. Do not use while breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
Allergic reactions, sometimes serious, have been reported; people allergic to Lidocaine or similar medicines may be at higher risk. Use with care in kidney or liver disease. If you feel dizzy or weak, do not drive or operate machinery.
Overdose
Too much can cause sleepiness, severe muscle weakness, breathing difficulty and fits (seizures). Seek emergency medical help straight away.

Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
