Sharbat Amla
Indications
Sharbat Amla is a Unani syrup made mainly from Amla (Indian gooseberry, Emblica officinalis), often with sugar and sometimes other herbs. It is traditionally used as a cooling tonic, to improve appetite and digestion, to support immunity as a natural source of vitamin C, and for general weakness. Scientific evidence is limited and it does not cure any disease.
How It Works
Amla provides vitamin C and plant antioxidants (tannins and polyphenols) that help protect cells and support healing and immunity. In Unani tradition it is described as strengthening the stomach, liver and heart.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. It is usually taken 1 to 2 times a day, often mixed with water, with a smaller amount for children. Shake well and use the measuring cup provided.
Interactions
Amla may slightly lower blood sugar and slow blood clotting; take care with diabetes medicines and blood thinners such as Warfarin or Aspirin. The vitamin C content may increase iron absorption.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Amla or any ingredient
- Uncontrolled diabetes, because of the sugar content
- Bleeding disorders, unless advised by a doctor
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Acidity, stomach upset or loose stools may occur.
Get urgent medical help if you notice unusual bleeding or bruising, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, rash or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Amla as food is considered safe. Medicinal syrups have not been well studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding; ask your doctor before use.
Precautions and Warnings
People with diabetes should check the sugar content and monitor blood sugar. Tell your doctor about kidney stones or if you take blood thinners. Do not use it to replace prescribed treatment.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset, acidity, diarrhoea and high blood sugar in people with diabetes. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe.
