About the Medicine

Famotidine

What It Is Used For

Famotidine lowers the amount of acid the stomach makes. It is used for heartburn, acidity and indigestion, stomach and duodenal ulcers, and acid reflux (GERD).

How to Take It

Heartburn and acidity: 10 to 20 mg when needed, up to twice a day. Ulcers and reflux: usually 20 mg twice a day or 40 mg at bedtime, as your doctor advises. People with kidney disease need a lower dose.

Who Should Not Take It

Do not take it if you are allergic to Famotidine or similar medicines.

Side Effects

Usually mild: headache, dizziness, constipation or diarrhoea.

Precautions

See a doctor if heartburn lasts more than 2 weeks, or if you have trouble swallowing, weight loss, vomiting blood or black stools. Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Use only if a doctor advises it.

Interactions

It can reduce the absorption of Ketoconazole, Itraconazole and some HIV medicines. Antacids taken at the same time can reduce its effect slightly.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
