Nystatin
Indications
Nystatin is used to treat infections caused by Candida yeast (thrush), mainly in the mouth and throat (oral thrush), and also in the gut, on the skin and in the vagina, depending on the form. It is also used to prevent thrush in people at higher risk, such as those with weak immunity.
How It Works
Nystatin is an antifungal. It binds to the outer membrane of the yeast cell and makes it leak, which kills the yeast. Very little is absorbed from the gut or skin, so it works mainly where it is applied.
Dosage and Administration
Oral suspension (100,000 units per ml), adults: usually 1 ml four times a day after food, often for 7 days. Hold the liquid in the mouth and swish it around the affected areas for as long as possible before swallowing. Shake well before use. Continue for 2 days after the white patches have gone. For babies and children, and for vaginal or skin forms, use as prescribed or as stated on the pack. Remove dentures before each dose and clean them.
Interactions
No important interactions are known, because very little nystatin enters the blood. Leave a gap after eating or using other mouth products so the medicine stays in the mouth longer.
Contraindications
Allergy to nystatin or any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Some people have mouth irritation, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea, especially with high doses. Rash may occur.
Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash with blisters or peeling skin.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Very little is absorbed, so it is generally considered suitable in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but use it only on a doctor's advice. If treating thrush on the nipples, wipe off any remaining medicine before feeding unless the doctor advises otherwise.
Precautions and Warnings
- Complete the full course even if symptoms improve quickly.
- See a doctor if there is no improvement after about a week, if thrush keeps coming back, or if there is difficulty or pain when swallowing.
- The suspension may contain sugar; people with diabetes should check the label and clean their teeth after use.
Overdose
Swallowing too much may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Serious harm is unlikely; seek medical advice if symptoms are troublesome.
Therapeutic Class
Polyene antifungal.
Storage
Store below 30°C, or as stated on the pack, in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Once opened, use the suspension within the time stated on the label.
