About the Medicine

Cefaclor

Indications

Cefaclor is an antibiotic used for bacterial infections of the ear (otitis media), throat and tonsils, sinuses, chest (bronchitis and pneumonia), urinary tract, and skin and soft tissue. It does not work against viral infections such as colds and flu.

How It Works

It stops bacteria from building their cell wall, so the bacteria break apart and die.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: usually 250 mg every 8 hours; for more severe infections the doctor may give 500 mg every 8 hours. Modified-release tablets are usually taken twice a day as directed on the pack. Children: dose depends on body weight, as prescribed. Finish the full course even if you feel better. Shake the suspension well before use and measure with the supplied spoon or syringe.

Interactions

  • Probenecid raises cefaclor levels in the blood.
  • It may increase the effect of Warfarin; the INR (blood clotting test) may need checking.
  • Antacids taken within an hour can reduce absorption of modified-release tablets.
  • It can give a false positive result in some urine sugar tests.

Contraindications

Allergy to cefaclor or any other cephalosporin antibiotic. People who have had a severe allergic reaction to Penicillin should not take it unless a doctor decides it is safe.

Side Effects

Common: diarrhoea, nausea, stomach upset, rash and itching, and vaginal thrush. A reaction with rash, joint pain and fever (serum sickness-like reaction) can occur, more often in children, usually during or soon after a course.

Get urgent medical help for:

  • Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing.
  • A blistering or peeling skin rash.
  • Severe or bloody diarrhoea, during or up to a few weeks after the course.
  • Rash with painful swollen joints and fever.
  • Yellow skin or eyes, or unusual bruising or bleeding.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Cephalosporins are generally considered safe in pregnancy when a doctor decides they are needed. Small amounts pass into breast milk; breastfeeding can usually continue, but watch the baby for diarrhoea, rash or thrush.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Tell the doctor about any past allergy to antibiotics, especially Penicillin.
  • Use with care in severe kidney disease and in people with a history of colitis.
  • Long courses can allow other germs or thrush to overgrow.

Overdose

May cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea. Seek medical advice, especially for a child.

Therapeutic Class

Second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.

Storage

Capsules, tablets and dry powder: store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Mixed suspension: keep in the fridge at 2 to 8°C and throw away any left after 14 days.
