About the Medicine

Marham Neem

Indications

Marham Neem is a Unani ointment (marham means ointment) based on neem (Azadirachta indica), usually combined with other traditional herbal ingredients. It is traditionally applied to the skin for minor skin problems such as itching, small boils, pimples, minor cuts and scrapes, fungal-type itchy patches and dry, irritated skin. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a substitute for medical treatment of serious or spreading skin infections.

How It Works

Neem leaves, bark and seed oil contain natural compounds (such as nimbin, nimbidin and azadirachtin) that have shown antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory studies. Applied as an ointment, it may help keep minor wounds clean, soothe itching and reduce redness. The ointment base also softens and protects the skin.

Dosage and Administration

For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer two or three times a day, or as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Wash your hands after use unless the hands are being treated. Do not apply to large areas of broken skin, and keep away from the eyes, mouth and inside of the nose.

Interactions

Interactions with medicines taken by mouth are unlikely when used on the skin. Avoid applying other creams or ointments to the same area at the same time unless a doctor advises it.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to neem or any other ingredient of the ointment.
  • Deep wounds, burns, or skin that is badly infected, oozing or spreading quickly.

Side Effects

Most people tolerate it well. Some may get local burning, redness, itching or an allergic skin rash (contact dermatitis). Stop using it if irritation develops.

Get urgent medical help if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, or if a skin infection spreads quickly, becomes very painful or is accompanied by fever.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Small amounts applied to the skin are unlikely to cause harm, but there is little safety information. Neem must not be taken by mouth during pregnancy. Ask a doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and do not apply it to the breast or nipple area before feeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not swallow. Neem oil taken by mouth can be seriously poisonous, especially for babies and young children, so keep the tube or jar safely away from them. If a skin problem does not improve within a week, keeps coming back, or affects a person with diabetes or a weak immune system, see a doctor.

Overdose

Using too much on the skin is unlikely to be harmful, but it may increase irritation. If any is swallowed, particularly by a child, seek medical help immediately and take the pack with you, as neem can cause vomiting, drowsiness and fits.
