About the Medicine

Difluprednate

Indications

Difluprednate is a strong corticosteroid eye drop (ophthalmic emulsion). It is used to treat inflammation and pain after eye surgery, such as cataract surgery, and to treat anterior uveitis (inflammation inside the front part of the eye).

How It Works

Difluprednate reduces the release of substances that cause inflammation, swelling, redness and pain in the eye tissues, helping the eye heal more comfortably.

Dosage and Administration

Use exactly as prescribed by your eye doctor. After surgery it is commonly started 24 hours after the operation at one drop in the affected eye 4 times a day for 2 weeks, then twice a day for a week, then reduced as directed. For uveitis, it is often used 4 times a day for 2 weeks and then tapered. Shake well before use. Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye. Remove contact lenses before use. Do not stop suddenly; your doctor will reduce the dose slowly.

Interactions

No important interactions with other medicines are known. If you use other eye drops, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between them.

Contraindications

  • Viral eye infections such as herpes simplex keratitis, chickenpox or vaccinia
  • Fungal or mycobacterial (for example tuberculous) infections of the eye
  • Untreated bacterial eye infection
  • Allergy to difluprednate or any ingredient

Side Effects

Common effects include raised pressure inside the eye, blurred vision, eye irritation, redness, pain, and a feeling of something in the eye. Long use can lead to glaucoma (optic nerve damage), cataract and eye infections, and may slow wound healing.

Get urgent medical help for eye pain that gets worse, a sudden drop in vision, seeing halos around lights, a discharge of pus, or increased redness and swelling.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is limited information on use in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use only if your doctor thinks the benefit is greater than the risk.

Precautions and Warnings

Your eye doctor should check eye pressure regularly, especially if used for more than 10 days. Do not use longer than prescribed. Do not share your drops. Vision may blur briefly after use, so do not drive until it clears.

Overdose

Using too much in the eye is unlikely to cause sudden harm; rinse the eye with clean water if needed. If swallowed, seek medical advice.
