About the Medicine

L-Glutathione

Indications

L-Glutathione is a small protein-like molecule made naturally in the body from three amino acids (cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine). As an oral supplement it is used as an antioxidant to support general health and liver function, and it is widely promoted for a brighter, more even skin tone. Evidence that tablets or capsules raise body levels or lighten skin is limited and mixed, and results, if any, are usually modest.

How It Works

Glutathione is one of the main natural antioxidants inside cells. It helps neutralise harmful molecules called free radicals, recycles other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, and helps the liver process and remove certain toxins. It may also shift skin pigment production towards a lighter form of melanin, which is the basis of its use for skin tone. Much of the glutathione taken by mouth is broken down in the gut, which may limit its effect.

Dosage and Administration

Take by mouth as directed on the label. Commonly used amounts are 250 to 500 mg a day, usually on an empty stomach or as the label advises. Do not exceed the labelled dose. Glutathione injections for skin lightening are not recommended and should not be self-administered.

Interactions

No major interactions are well established with oral glutathione. It is theoretically possible that high-dose antioxidants could reduce the effect of some cancer chemotherapy, so people having cancer treatment should check with their oncologist before taking it.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to glutathione or any ingredient in the product.
  • People having chemotherapy or radiotherapy, unless the cancer specialist agrees.

Side Effects

Oral glutathione is usually well tolerated. Bloating, stomach cramps, loose stools or a skin rash may occur. In people with asthma, inhaled forms have triggered wheezing.

Get urgent medical help if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing, or a widespread rash or blistering of the skin.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough safety information for glutathione supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is best avoided unless a doctor recommends it.

Precautions and Warnings

Be cautious of products that promise dramatic skin whitening; some unregulated products have been found to contain harmful substances. Use sunscreen, as any change in skin tone is easily reversed by sun exposure. People with asthma should stop it if breathing symptoms appear.

Overdose

Taking more than directed is unlikely to be dangerous but may cause stomach upset. Seek medical advice if you feel unwell and take the pack with you.
