About the Medicine

Inositol

Indications

Inositol, mainly in the form called myo-inositol and often combined with Folic Acid, is a nutritional supplement. It is most commonly used in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to help improve insulin sensitivity, regular periods and ovulation. It is also used as a supplement in some fertility and pregnancy-support products, and in multivitamin preparations.

How It Works

Inositol is a natural vitamin-like substance found in fruits, beans, grains and nuts, and the body also makes it. It helps carry the signals of insulin and some other hormones inside cells. In PCOS, extra inositol can help the body respond better to insulin, which may lower raised male hormones and support normal ovulation.

Dosage and Administration

Adults, PCOS: commonly 2 g (2000 mg) of myo-inositol twice a day, or as the doctor advises. Products vary in strength and in what they are combined with, so follow the label or the doctor's advice. Sachets should be dissolved in a glass of water. For fertility treatment or pregnancy use, take only as prescribed. Benefits usually take at least 2 to 3 months of regular use. Not for children unless prescribed.

Interactions

Inositol may add to the blood-sugar-lowering effect of diabetes medicines such as Metformin, Glimepiride or insulin; blood sugar may need closer checking. Tell the doctor about all medicines and supplements you take, especially during fertility treatment.

Contraindications

Allergy to Inositol or any ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated at normal doses. Higher doses can cause nausea, wind, loose stools, tiredness, headache or dizziness.

Get urgent medical help for signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Myo-inositol has been studied in pregnancy, but it should only be taken during pregnancy on the doctor's advice. There is little information on use while breastfeeding; ask the doctor before using it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • It is a supplement and does not replace treatment the doctor has prescribed for PCOS, diabetes or infertility.
  • People with diabetes should check blood sugar more often when starting.
  • People with bipolar disorder should ask a doctor first, as high doses of inositol may affect mood.

Overdose

Serious harm is unlikely. Too much may cause stomach upset and diarrhoea. Seek medical advice if symptoms are troublesome.

Therapeutic Class

Vitamin-like nutritional supplement (insulin sensitiser).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
