About the Medicine

Nimbadi Churna

Indications

Nimbadi Churna is a classical Ayurvedic powder (churna means powder) in which neem (Azadirachta indica) is the main herb, combined with other traditional herbs. It is traditionally used as a so-called blood purifier for skin complaints such as pimples and acne, boils, itching, eczema-like rashes and other chronic skin conditions. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a cure for any skin disease.

How It Works

Neem contains bitter compounds such as nimbin, nimbidin and azadirachtin that have shown antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory studies. In Ayurvedic thinking, bitter herbs are said to cleanse the blood and cool the body. How much of this translates into benefits for the skin in people is not well established.

Dosage and Administration

Take by mouth only as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, usually mixed with water after meals. Do not exceed the stated amount and do not use it for long periods without advice. It is not recommended for babies and young children.

Interactions

Neem may lower blood sugar, so people taking diabetes medicines such as Metformin, Glibenclamide or Insulin should monitor their sugar closely. Neem may stimulate the immune system and could reduce the effect of immunosuppressants such as Tacrolimus, Ciclosporin or corticosteroids. Tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you use.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy, or trying to conceive.
  • Babies and young children.
  • Allergy to neem or other ingredients.
  • Autoimmune diseases, organ transplant, or liver or kidney disease, unless a doctor agrees.

Side Effects

Possible effects include a bitter taste, nausea, stomach upset and loose stools. Long-term or high-dose use of neem by mouth has been linked with liver and kidney problems, and low blood sugar.

Get urgent medical help if there is yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, vomiting, drowsiness, fits, shakiness and sweating from low blood sugar, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy, as neem taken by mouth may cause miscarriage, and it has been used traditionally to reduce fertility. There is not enough safety information for breastfeeding, so avoid it.

Precautions and Warnings

Keep out of the reach of children: neem products taken by mouth can be seriously poisonous in small children. Skin conditions that are severe, spreading, painful or not improving need a doctor's assessment. People with diabetes should check their blood sugar more often.

Overdose

Large amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, drowsiness, fits and liver damage, especially in children. Seek medical help immediately and take the pack with you.
