Ethyl Butylacetylaminopropionate
Indications
Ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate (also known as IR3535) is an insect repellent applied to the skin. It is used to help prevent bites from mosquitoes, as well as ticks, sandflies, biting flies and some other insects. Avoiding mosquito bites lowers the risk of diseases they spread, such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya.
How It Works
It is a synthetic compound related to a natural amino acid. When applied to the skin it interferes with the insect's sense of smell, so the insect finds it hard to locate and land on the skin. It does not kill insects. Protection lasts several hours, depending on the strength of the product, sweating and the type of insect.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the product label. Apply an even, thin layer to exposed skin only, including the neck and ankles, and avoid the eyes, mouth and broken skin. For the face, apply to the hands first and then spread it, avoiding the eyes and lips. Reapply after swimming, heavy sweating or when insects start biting again, but not more often than the label allows. In children, an adult should apply it and avoid the child's hands. Wash treated skin with soap and water when protection is no longer needed.
Interactions
No interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known. If using sunscreen, apply the sunscreen first, let it dry, then apply the repellent.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to any ingredient of the product.
- Do not apply on cuts, wounds, irritated skin or under clothing.
- Follow the label for the minimum age for children.
Side Effects
It is generally well tolerated on the skin. It can cause stinging and watering if it gets in the eyes, and occasionally mild skin redness or itching. It may damage some plastics and synthetic fabrics.
Get urgent medical help if a child swallows the product, if eye irritation is severe and does not settle after rinsing, or if you notice signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. Also see a doctor for fever after insect bites, especially in areas with dengue or malaria.
Pregnancy and Lactation
IR3535 is considered suitable for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed, and preventing mosquito bites is important in pregnancy. Do not apply it to the breast area before feeding.
Precautions and Warnings
For external use only. Keep away from eyes and mouth; if it gets in the eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Do not spray near food or onto the face directly. Many sprays are flammable, so keep them away from flames. Use other protection too, such as long sleeves and mosquito nets.
Overdose
Excessive use on the skin may cause irritation; wash it off with soap and water. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and contact a doctor or poison centre.
Therapeutic Class
Topical insect repellent.
