Dexpanthenol
Indications
Dexpanthenol (provitamin B5) is used on the skin to prevent and soothe nappy rash, and to help heal minor skin problems such as dry or cracked skin, small cuts and grazes, mild burns and sunburn, and sore or cracked nipples in breastfeeding mothers. Some eye, nasal and oral products also contain it.
How It Works
Dexpanthenol is absorbed into the skin and changed into pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), which skin cells need to grow and repair. It also attracts and holds water, so it moisturises the skin, reduces irritation and helps damaged skin heal faster.
Dosage and Administration
For the skin: apply a thin layer to the clean, dry affected area once or several times a day, or as directed on the label. For nappy rash, apply at every nappy change after cleaning and drying the area. For nipple care, apply after each feed. Other forms (eye gel, nasal spray) should be used as directed on the label.
Interactions
No significant interactions are known with skin use. If you use other creams on the same area, ask a pharmacist about the best order of use.
Contraindications
- Allergy to dexpanthenol or any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
Side effects are rare. Some people get mild itching, redness, rash or a stinging feeling where it is applied, which may be an allergic reaction.
Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash. See a doctor if the skin becomes more red, swollen, painful or pus-filled, as this may mean infection.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Dexpanthenol skin products are considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Products made for nipple care do not need to be wiped off before feeding unless the label says otherwise.
Precautions and Warnings
- For deep, large or infected wounds, or serious burns, see a doctor.
- If nappy rash does not improve within a few days, or there are blisters, bleeding or white patches, ask a doctor.
- Avoid contact with eyes unless using an eye product.
Overdose
Overdose is not expected with skin use. If a child swallows some, it is unlikely to be harmful; seek advice if they feel unwell.
