Indications

This is a combined food supplement containing amino acids (protein building blocks such as cysteine and methionine), vitamins (often biotin and other B vitamins), minerals (such as zinc, iron, copper and selenium) and plant-based silicon (usually from horsetail or bamboo extract). It is mainly used to support the health of hair, skin and nails, for example during hair thinning or hair fall linked with poor diet, or brittle nails. Supplements help most when there is an actual shortage of a nutrient; they are less likely to help hair loss with other causes such as genetics, thyroid disease or hormonal changes.

How It Works

Hair and nails are made mainly of keratin, a protein rich in sulphur-containing amino acids such as cysteine. Biotin and other B vitamins help the body use these building blocks, zinc, iron and copper are needed for healthy hair growth cycles, and silicon is thought to help strengthen hair and nails and support collagen in the skin. Correcting a shortage of these nutrients can reduce hair shedding and improve nail strength over several months.

Dosage and Administration

Take by mouth as directed on the label, usually once a day with food and water. Results, if any, usually take 3 to 6 months to appear, as hair and nails grow slowly. Do not take more than the recommended amount, and avoid taking other supplements with the same vitamins and minerals at the same time unless a doctor advises it.

Interactions

Minerals such as iron, zinc and calcium can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin) and of Levothyroxine; take these at least 2 to 4 hours apart. High-dose biotin can give falsely high or low results in some blood tests, including thyroid and heart (troponin) tests, so tell your doctor and the laboratory that you take it; it is usually advised to stop it a few days before such tests.

Contraindications

• Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
• Conditions with iron or copper build-up, such as haemochromatosis or Wilson's disease, if the product contains these minerals.

Side Effects

Most people tolerate it well. Possible effects include nausea, stomach upset, constipation or loose stools, dark stools (from iron), a metallic taste, or acne-like spots in some people.

Get urgent medical help if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash. See a doctor if hair loss is sudden, patchy or heavy, as this needs medical assessment.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Some ingredients may not be suitable in these doses during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use a supplement designed for pregnancy instead, or ask a doctor before taking this product.

Precautions and Warnings

Hair loss can be caused by thyroid disease, anaemia, hormonal problems, scalp conditions or medicines, so see a doctor if it continues. Keep the product away from children, as accidental swallowing of iron-containing supplements is dangerous for young children.

Overdose

Taking much more than directed may cause vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea. Overdose of iron-containing products can be very dangerous in children. Seek medical help immediately and take the pack with you.
