About the Medicine

Felbinac

Indications

Felbinac is an anti-inflammatory medicine applied to the skin as a gel or foam. It is used for short-term relief of pain, swelling and stiffness from muscle and joint injuries such as sprains, strains and bruises, and from soft-tissue conditions such as tendinitis. It may also help mild joint pain from osteoarthritis.

How It Works

Felbinac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). When rubbed on the skin it passes into the tissues underneath and blocks the cyclo-oxygenase enzymes that make prostaglandins, chemicals that cause pain and inflammation. Because it acts locally, much less reaches the bloodstream than with NSAID tablets.

Dosage and Administration

For adults and children over 12 years, apply a thin layer to the painful area and rub in gently 2 to 4 times a day, as directed on the label. Do not use more than the daily amount stated on the pack. Wash your hands after use unless the hands are being treated. Do not use for longer than 14 days without medical advice.

  • Do not cover the treated area with tight or airtight dressings.
  • Do not apply heat pads over the area.

Interactions

Interactions are less likely than with tablets, but avoid using it at the same time as other NSAID products (such as Ibuprofen or Diclofenac tablets or gels) unless a doctor advises it. Take care if you use blood thinners such as Warfarin. Do not apply other creams to the same area at the same time.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Felbinac or any ingredient.
  • History of asthma, hives, runny nose or swelling triggered by Aspirin or other NSAIDs.
  • On broken, infected or eczema-affected skin, or near the eyes, mouth or other mucous membranes.
  • Last 3 months of pregnancy.

Side Effects

Side effects are usually mild and local: redness, itching, rash, dryness or a burning feeling where it is applied. Rarely, stomach upset may occur.

Stop using it and get urgent medical help if you develop wheezing or difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips or throat, a widespread rash or blistering of the skin.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use in the last 3 months of pregnancy, as NSAIDs may harm the baby and affect labour. In earlier pregnancy and during breastfeeding, use only if a doctor advises it, and do not apply to the breast area.

Precautions and Warnings

Use with caution in people with asthma, kidney problems or a history of stomach ulcers. Avoid exposing the treated skin to strong sunlight. Do not use on children under 12 years unless advised by a doctor. See a doctor if pain does not improve or gets worse.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely with skin use. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, seek medical advice promptly; it may cause stomach upset.

Therapeutic Class

Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the cap tightly closed; the product may be flammable, so keep it away from flames.
