About the Medicine

Crisaborole

Indications

Crisaborole ointment is used on the skin to treat mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children from 3 months of age. Eczema causes dry, itchy, red and inflamed skin.

How It Works

Crisaborole is a non-steroid medicine that blocks an enzyme called phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inside skin and immune cells. This raises a chemical messenger called cyclic AMP, which reduces the release of substances that cause inflammation and itching. Because it is not a steroid, it does not cause skin thinning.

Dosage and Administration

Apply a thin layer to the affected areas twice daily, or as directed by your doctor. Wash your hands after applying unless the hands are being treated. It is for use on the skin only; keep it away from the eyes, mouth and inside the vagina. Moisturisers can still be used, but apply them at a different time as advised by your doctor.

Interactions

Very little of the medicine is absorbed into the body, so interactions with medicines taken by mouth are unlikely. Avoid applying other skin products to the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises it.

Contraindications

Do not use crisaborole if you are allergic to crisaborole or to any ingredient of the ointment.

Side Effects

The most common side effect is pain, burning or stinging where the ointment is applied, usually mild and short-lived. Less often, itching, redness or irritation at the application site can occur.

Get urgent medical help if you develop signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, severe itching, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing. Stop using the ointment and see a doctor if strong burning or a rash spreads beyond the treated area.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is limited information on use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, although very little is absorbed through the skin. Use it only if your doctor advises it. If breastfeeding, do not apply it to the nipple area.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not use on infected skin unless the infection is being treated. Do not cover the treated area with tight bandages unless told to. If eczema does not improve after a few weeks or gets worse, see your doctor. It is not recommended for babies under 3 months.

Overdose

Using too much on the skin is unlikely to cause serious harm but may increase irritation. If the ointment is swallowed, contact a doctor or poison centre for advice.

Therapeutic Class

Topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent; phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the tube tightly closed.
