About the Medicine

Povidone

Indications

Povidone (also called polyvidone or PVP) is a water-soluble polymer. In medicines it is used mainly in artificial tear eye drops to relieve dry, gritty, tired or irritated eyes caused by reduced tear production, dry air, screen use or wind. It is also widely used as an inactive ingredient in tablets and liquids. Povidone on its own is different from Povidone-Iodine, which is an antiseptic.

How It Works

In eye drops, povidone forms a thin, moist film over the surface of the eye. This film holds water, adds thickness to the natural tears and helps them stay on the eye longer, which soothes dryness and reduces friction when blinking. In tablets it acts as a binder that holds the powder together.

Dosage and Administration

For dry eyes in adults: usually 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) 3 to 4 times a day or as often as needed, or as directed on the label or by your doctor. Wash your hands before use, do not let the dropper tip touch the eye or any surface, and close the bottle after use. If you use other eye drops, leave at least 5 minutes between them.

Interactions

No important interactions are known. Other eye drops or ointments should be spaced at least 5 minutes apart, with ointments used last.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to povidone or any other ingredient, including the preservative in the drops.

Side Effects

Brief stinging, mild blurring of vision just after use and sticky eyelids can occur. Some people are sensitive to preservatives in multi-dose bottles and may get eye redness or irritation.

Get urgent medical help if you have eye pain, a sudden change in vision, increasing redness or swelling, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Povidone eye drops act on the surface of the eye and very little is absorbed into the body, so they are generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Precautions and Warnings

Remove soft contact lenses before using preserved drops and wait about 15 minutes before putting them back. If blurred vision occurs, do not drive or use machines until it clears. Stop and see a doctor if symptoms do not improve within a few days, or if the eye becomes painful or red. Do not use a bottle longer than the time stated on the label after opening (often 28 days).

Overdose

Using too many drops is unlikely to cause harm; rinse the eye with clean water if it feels uncomfortable. If drops are swallowed by a child, seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Ocular lubricant (artificial tears); pharmaceutical excipient.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Discard the bottle as stated on the label after opening.
