Salmon Oil
Indications
Salmon Oil is a fish oil supplement taken from the tissue of salmon. It is a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, mainly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). It is used as a dietary supplement to support heart health, help maintain healthy blood fat (triglyceride) levels, and support brain, eye and joint health. It may also be used when the diet contains little oily fish.
How It Works
Omega-3 fatty acids become part of the membranes of cells throughout the body. They help lower the liver's production of triglycerides, have a mild anti-inflammatory effect, and support normal function of the heart, blood vessels, brain and retina (the light-sensing layer of the eye).
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label. A common amount is 1 to 2 capsules (often 1 g each) once or twice daily with meals. Swallow capsules whole with water. Taking it with food improves absorption and reduces fishy aftertaste. Higher doses for raised triglycerides should only be taken on a doctor's advice.
Interactions
- Blood thinners such as Warfarin, Clopidogrel or Aspirin: high doses of omega-3 may slightly increase the risk of bleeding.
- Blood pressure medicines: may add a small extra lowering effect.
- Orlistat may reduce absorption of fish oil; take them a few hours apart.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and supplements you take.
Contraindications
Do not take if you are allergic to fish or to any ingredient of the product. Seek medical advice first if you have a bleeding disorder.
Side Effects
Most people tolerate it well. Possible side effects include fishy aftertaste or burps, bad breath, heartburn, nausea, loose stools and mild stomach upset. High doses may cause easy bruising or nosebleeds.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing) or any unusual or heavy bleeding.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Omega-3 fatty acids are generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding at usual supplement amounts, and DHA supports the baby's brain and eye development. Choose a purified product and ask your doctor before starting, especially at higher doses.
Precautions and Warnings
- Stop taking it about one to two weeks before planned surgery unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- Use with care if you have liver disease or diabetes, and follow your doctor's advice.
- Fish oil supplements are not a replacement for prescribed heart medicines.
- Keep within the recommended amount; very high intake has no extra benefit for most people.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset, diarrhoea and an increased tendency to bleed. If a large amount has been taken, or there is bleeding, contact a doctor.
